Everyday Eyes

Everyday Eyes

Growing up in a working class family, I’ve often been struck by the futility of the day-to-day grind of working to live, living to work. Sort of the hamster wheel of life, wherein, for the average person, having dreams and pursuing them is often outside the realm of reality. A large percentage of the few who do pursue their dreams often wind up giving up. For most people the majority of our lives are spent merely struggling to survive. My parents worked very hard when I was young. We lived a working class existence. We certainly weren’t rich. We had some good times and we had some hard times. And there came a point where the hard times took over. To witness my parents work so hard all of their lives to create a good life for our family, and then see it ultimately disappear made a huge impact on me. I decided that, come what may, I was going to pursue my dreams. Because there are no guarantees and money often comes and goes. This song was a direct result of that experience.

Listen to song

I look at their eyes
And wonder what’s behind
Faces can hide

What we feel inside
We all have our dreams
Some day we’ll achieve
But somehow it seems
We get lost in our routines

I see all, I see all
All that I never wanted to be
Tell me why, tell me why
Why do we work so hard to succeed?

Everyday people live everyday lives
All of the children, husbands and wives
Race to the rhythm, the beat of the world
All their dreams are disguised by everyday eyes

We rise in degrees
And get the jobs that feed
But some of us dream
Of a different currency

What’s it all for?
Did you think that there’d be more
Than to slowly conform
To a life that leaves you bored?

I see all, I see all
All that I never wanted to be
Tell me why, tell me why
Why do we work so hard to succeed?

Everyday people live everyday lives
All of the children, husbands and wives
Race to the rhythm, the beat of the world
All their dreams are disguised by everyday eyes

Everyday eyes
Everyday eyes
Everyday eyes
Everyday eyes

I see all, I see all
All that I never wanted to be
Tell me why, tell me why
Why do we work so hard to succeed?

Everyday people live everyday lives
All of the children, husbands and wives
Race to the rhythm, the beat of the world
All their dreams are disguised—

Everyday people live everyday lives
All of the children, husbands and wives
Race to the rhythm, the beat of the world
All their dreams are disguised by everyday eyes
