Hangin' On The Line

Hangin' On The Line

I tend to write a fair number of what I would consider hopeful songs. This is not one of them. I almost called this song working class blues. In a nutshell, this song is about the struggles that so many of us go through…to pay the bills, to live from day to day. And sometimes the weight of that is too much. And it can feel, quite frankly, like you are hanging on the line. Not a new idea, but my take on it. In the recording studio, I produced it in a way to try to reflect that same feeling of tension that the lyrics project. It starts off on the street with traffic and sirens, and the saxophone plays more and more dissonantly as the cacophony builds into the beginning of the song.

Listen to song

I’ve got to find my way in this world
And it’s making me crazy
Cause it’s getting harder and harder
To keep up the pace now baby

It’s got me hangin’ on the line
Workin’ overtime, baby, baby
It keeps on knocking at my door
I’m crawlin’ on the floor, baby, baby

Been livin’ on the edge
And I can’t hold out much longer
Struggle to make ends meet
But my sweat never feeds this hunger…it’s no wonder…

It’s got me hangin’ on the line
Workin’ overtime, baby, baby
It keeps on knocking at my door
I’m crawlin’ on the floor, baby, baby

And when my bones get tired
Left with no desires but survival
They’ll bury me with my dreams
My hopes, they were dead on arrival

It’s got me hangin’ on the line
Workin’ overtime, baby, baby
It keeps on knocking at my door
I’m crawlin’ on the floor, baby, baby

It’s got me hangin’ on the line
Workin’ overtime, baby, baby
It keeps on knocking at my door
I’m crawlin’ on the floor, baby, baby

It’s got me hangin’ on the line
Workin’ overtime, baby, baby
It keeps on knocking at my door
I’m crawlin’ on the floor, baby, baby
