I’ve had people tell me they think this is possibly the most straight up pop song I’ve ever written. When I was growing up and listening to the radio, most pop music had different chords in the verse than the chorus, and similarly the bridge would go to a different place. Sometimes a song might even modulate to a different key. Over the last decade or so, a lot of pop music has taken on a sort of hypnotic quality, where the chord progression will stay the same throughout the entire song, while the melody to the verse, chorus, and bridge will change. It’s an interesting phenomenon. When I first started to write this song, I was experimenting with that technique. The lyrical theme of this song is an average day, going through a regular daily routine, and how that routine repeats day after day. It’s easy to get lost in the humdrum of daily life. My lyrics are saying what I try to tell myself, “Pay attention. This is our one chance to be alive, as far as we know. Don’t take anything for granted and make the most of all of the time we have.”
