I get ideas for songs at all different times, day or night, and in different situations. Before cell phones had the ability to record audio, I would keep cassette recorders in different rooms in my house so that I could capture an idea when it came to me. Now I just record ideas straight into my iPhone. Sometimes even when I’m driving. The initial melody for this song hit me out of the blue one day and I put some chords to it on the piano. For many months, I found myself singing the melody. I couldn’t get it out of my head. And as I would continually sing it more sections of the song developed, melodically, in my head, until I had the melody of the entire song and the chord progression completely mapped out. But I had no lyrics. All I had in the way of lyrics is what I refer to as placeholder lyrics. Often, when I first get an idea for a song, I will get some kind of lyric along with a melody, and if I’m lucky those lyrics point me in a direction for where the song wants to go. But in this case I had no idea where the lyrics wanted to go. When I finally decided I was very attached to the melody of this song I spent a long time trying to decide what the lyrics would be. It’s very unusual for me to write the melody for an entire song and then try to make words fit the melody. It isn’t easy. First of all, the syllables need to be able to match the notes of the melody. Once I came up with the title, which is also the chorus hook, the rest of the lyrics started to unfold pretty naturally.
